HAUSA FILM ACADEMY IN COLABRATION WITH KANO STATE FILM CENSORSHIP BOARD

This is a major annual Film and home video industry event aimed at promoting positive and desirable film culture and values in Nigeria .The objective of the festival is to improve the quality and content relevance of film and home video production in Nigeria generally with emphasis on the Hausa film genre as a major film/home video movie type.
As the first of its kind anywhere in west Africa, Hausa Film Festival is aimed at promoting film production, culture in the entire west African sub-region where Hausa cultural practice are pre-dominant.
The Festival is also geared towards providing a convenient forum for the stakeholders in the film and the home video production industry in Nigeria and other West African sub-region to exchange ideas on film development and production generally and Hausa films in particular.
The Festival is open, but not limited to all categories of films produced in Hausa language or for Hausa film audience and markets across the West African sub-region. It is organized by the Hausa Film Academy in collaboration with Kano State Censor ship Board. It is expected to be major media event in Nigeria.
Hausa Film Festival is organized to commence in mid February 2002, to coincide with the Eid-el-Kabir Sallah Festival in Kano. This is because, as a major cultural festival, the occasion provides participants with a unique opportunity to avail themselves to the colourful and beautiful festive mood of the ancient city of Kano during the Eid-el-kabir festival.
It is strongly believed that a part of being major media event in the state, the festival will also attract some international tourist across several countries of the West African sub-region. contact has already been made with film makers and marketers in Niger, Ghana and Republic of Cameroun. It is also envisaged that all NTA stations in the 16 northern states of Nigeria will take part in the festival.
B. THE FESTIVAL STRUCTURE
Hausa Film Festival 2002 a 5-day activity celebrating the very best of the Hausa film industry. The festival provides a good avenue for film makers, critics and enthusiast of Hausa film to get a first overview and experience of the bubbling Hausa home video and film industry blossoming in Nigeria, which provide the commercial lifeline of the industry.
MAJOR ATTRACTIONS OF THE FESTIVAL
The major events which will mark the festival include:-
A number of technical awards will be given to deserving individuals and firms who have demonstrated an exceptional talent and skills in various area of the film production.
2. SPECIAL AWARDS
(a) Honorary awards will also be given to some highly deserving individuals for their enormous contribution towards the development of the young industry.
(b) Excellence performance award
This is also an award which is primarily geared towards encouraging high performance from the industry sub-sector e.g. distribution, marketing and exhibition. Awards in this category include:
-Best selling film/most popular film
-Best film distributor
-Best film exhibitor
-Best friend of the industry
The festival organizers also integrated short lecture and symposia session through out the 3 days festival periods.
Topics of the lecture series cut across every aspect of the industry from production, marketing, Distribution, Promotion to areas linking the relevance of film to Hausa culture distinguished film makers, academics, critics and other specialist will be invited to speak on topics of their expertise.
The objective of this segment of the festival is to up date the skills and competence of the practitioners in the industry as well as to provide an avenue of exchange of ideas between and among the different sectors of the industry.
4. FILM FAIR/BUSINESS SESSION
The festival period will also afford the participants with the opportunity to transact business across the industry sectors. Specifically, the festival fair/business session will provide opportunities:-
i. To initiate new film production contracts.
ii. Attract new agreement or contract with the T.V station about arising of their various home movies cleared by the national censors board as fit for broadcast
iii. Permit limit sales of locally produce home video movie buy producers and marketers at a determined price to the general public and a lot more.
This is aimed at opening up the industry to all interested members of the public, Governments and Corporate bodies.
5. SPECIAL SHOWS/EXHIBITIONS
Special exhibitions of some selected films and home videos designed to promote decent production standard by emphasizing content relevance and production values. In line with this, some selected films and home video which have made significant contribution towards the development of the industry, e.g. Shehu Umar, Kanta of Kebbi, Baban Larai, Kasarmu ce, Kulba na barna and many more would be shown during the special exhibition session.
Films specifically chosen for this limited exhibitions which include among others:-
1. Historical Epics
2. Feature length films
4. Drama (Home video)
Participation in Film Awards with technical category is strictly based on formal registration by obtaining and filling of the award entry form for the festival.
Members of the general public and practitioners interested in the Mini Fair/Business session of the festival should also obtain and fill form similar form from the festival secretariat situated at:
