COURSE CODES AND NUMBERING FOR DEGREE PROGRAMMES
i. The course code in Chemistry is CHM.
ii. The four digits numbering is retained with a few  modifications as follows:
  First digit - Level
  Second digit - Credit value
  Third digit - Subject area
  Fourth digit - Course number
However, O or 1 of the fourth digit identifies Core courses in all areas.

COURSE ASSESSMENT
Courses are assessed as follows:
a Courses with Practical Components
  Course Work 20%
  Practical 20%
  Examination 60%

b Courses without Practical Components
  Continuous Assessment 30%
  Examination 70%
This is consistent with the former assessment.

c Courses with only Practical Components
  Laboratory Report 50%
  Theory of Practical 50%

Course Requirements of the Department of Chemistry

Level I

Chemistry is studied as an 8 credit course in level 1000 "Basic Principles of Chemistry" together with Mathematics (6 credits Compulsory); General Studies (2 credits), Physics (8 credits) and 8 credits from either  Mathematics or  Biology

Level II

Chemistry is studied as a ten credit course in Level 200. "Introductory Degree Chemistry" together with two other 10 credit courses chosen from Mathematics, Physics and Biology.  Students cannot register for less than 10 credits in any of the other two subjects.  However, if students have many level one credits to carry over, they can register for less than 10 credits.  To qualify for the award of a degree, students must pass 10 credits each from two other departments. General Studies (4 credits)

Level III

At Level 3000, a chemistry student is required to take all his/her courses within the Department as follows:

  1. 14 credits of Compulsory core courses.

  2. In order to satisfy the requirement, a student must choose more courses from the electives as listed.

  3. Registration of Level III elective courses will not be allowed without first registering for the compulsory courses mentioned in (i) unless, however these have previously been passed.

  4. Students failing any of the above core courses in (i) must re-register and pass them  the following year.

Level IV
  1. Where a Level III course is specified as a pre-requisite, this must normally be passed. A student that fails to complete the core courses of Level III at end of Level IV, may be deemed not to have satisfied the requirement of B.Sc. degree in Chemistry.

  2. All students majoring in Chemistry must take CHM 4700 "Project and Seminar" as listed in Group A.

  3. Students not majoring in Chemistry may be required by the Department of Chemistry and their other department(s) to do a project which could be supervised by either department or jointly

  4. The courses in Level 400 are assigned to subject groups A, B, C, D and E. Candidates must satisfy (ii) above and choose at least 4 credits each from other groups with the following core courses inclusive

  CHM 4334 Coordination Chemistry
  CHM 4242 Physical Organic Chemistry
  CHM 4243 Heterocyclic Chemistry
CHM 4252 Theory of Molecular Spectroscopy

The remaining credits can be chosen freely from these groups to obtain either a minimum of 30 credits or maximum of 36 credits.

Some courses are compulsory in Level IV (CHM 4334, 4242, 4243, 4252)

Grouping of Level IV Courses
