BIO 1201: General Biology I

 

Zoology as a discipline; characteristics of animals as living things; cell as the basic unit of living things (animals); cell structure, organization, cellular organelles, tissues, organs and systems. Classification of animals, general reproduction and concept of inter-relationships in animals. Heredity and evolution. Animals ecology (introduction) and habitats.


   

BIO 1202: General Biology II

  General survey of the animal kingdom; similarities and differences in external morphology in Protozoa, Platyhelminthes, Annelids, Arthropods, Fishes, Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds and Mammals. Division of animal taxa in the animals kingdom

   

BIO 1203: General Biology III

  Same as BIO 1201 but with emphasis on plants

   

BIO 1204: General Biology IV

  Same as BIO 1202 but with emphasis on the plant kingdom, Becteria Viruses, Algae, Fungi, Bryophyte Eridophytes, Gymnosperms and Angiosperms

   

BIO 2201: Genetics I

  Hereditable and non-hereditable characteristics of living organisms the chromosome theory of inheritance, the chromosome structure of the Eukaryotes and Prokaryotes (bacteria and viruses). Linkage, crossing-over, sex-linkage, sex chromosomes and sex determination. The mechanisms of genetic recombination. Introduction to population genetics

   

BIO 2202: Introductory Ecology

  An introduction to ecological concepts and theories, broad division of ecology, eco-system and its components, e.g. species and populations, ecological niches and competition, energy flow, productivity, nutrient water cycles. Components of the abiotic environment; lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere. Components of the biotic environment; types of biomes, Tundra, Taiga, Deciduous forests Grassland, Desert, Tropical Rainforest. Biogeographical regions; Australian, Neotropical, Neoartic, Paleoartic, Oriental, Ethiopian. Ecosystem and its types

   

BIO 2203:  General Physiology I

  Physio-chemical processes in animals and plants; diffusion, osmotic pressure and osmolality. Water potential, turgor, diffusion, pressure, plasmolysis, Gibbs-Donan relationship. Gas exchange, partial pressures (Tension), Hydrogen-Iron concentration (PH). Henderson Hasselbach equation, buffers in physiology. Nutrition; photo-autotrophism, heterotrophism (essential requirements of each), Respiration and photosynthesis; RQ and QIO in relation to metabolism, photosynthesis, oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange

   

BIO 2204:  Biological Techniques

  The microscope types of microscopes and their uses. Preparation of microscopic slides, photometry, calorimetry, Chromatography, Conductmetry, Experiemental Designs

   
BIO 2205 Introductory Developmental Cell Biology
  History and present trends in cell biology.  reproduction cell division, cell differentiation and growth of cells.  Molecular basis of cell structure and developmental cell Biology. Proteins and nucleic acids.

   

BIO 2206:  Biostatisitcs

  Use of statistical methods in Biology and Agriculture. Frequency distribution, Law of probability, the binomial, Poisson and normal frequency distributions. Estimations and Tests of Hypothesis. Design of simple Agricultural and Biological experiments. Analysis of variance and co-variance, simple regression and co-relation, contingency tables, some non-parametric tests

  Functional biology of all vertebrate phyla, including the structure and functions of their organ systems. Bionomics, evolution and adaptive radiation. Zoogeography

  A survey of all the invertebrate phyla

  Principles and methods in biosystematics. Concept of Taxonomic characters. Morphological anatomical, palynological, embryological, cytological and phytochemical characters. Principles used in the delimitation of taxa and attribution of rank. Numerical taxonomy. Concepts of specific and intraspecific categories. Morphological study of selected plant families to illustrate evolutionary tendencies and phylogenetic relationships

BOT 3301: Plant Taxonomy

 

Taxonomy and its significance. Principles and concepts in plant taxonomy. Construction and use of taxonomic keys. Experimental taxonomy with special emphais on cyto-taxonomy and chemotaxonomy. Morphological study of selected plant families


 

BOT 3302: Comparative Anatomy of Plants

 

Characteristics and classification of tissue and tissue systems; organization of meristems, evolution of vascular tissues; comparative anatomy; anatomical adaptations to specialized habitats. Applied aspects of plant anatomy.

Plant water relationships, photosysthesis, respiration, growth and growth regulation; flowering, dormancy, seed germination, senescence. Physiological aspect of crop yield

  Study of various plant communities and their ecological framework; Nigerian vegetation; deserts and semi-deserts; plant productivity; modern concepts in ecology

Classification of Algae. Structure reproduction and life histories of representative types of the following divisions: bacillariophyta, chlorophyta, cyanophyta, euglenophyta, pyrrophyta and rhodophyta; ecology of freshwater, brackish water, marine and terrestrial algae

MCB 3301: Microbial Genetics and Molecular Biology - (Pre-requisites: BCHM 2201, BIO 2201, MCB 2201/MCB 2202)

 

A survey of the current status of microbial genetics (bacteria viruses, protozoa and fungi) including discussion on methods and findings in the areas of mutagenesis, inductions, isolation and biochemical characterization of mutants; adaptation, transformation, transduction conversion and conjugation. General and specialized methods and techniques in microbial genetics. Experiments with virulent phages, temperature phages and lysogenic bacteria. Fungal and other lower eukaryotic genetics


 

MCB 3302: Pathogenic Bacteriology

  Host-parasite relationships. Pathogenic microorganisms and disease. Virulence, spectrum and symptoms of infection; treatment and control. Kock’s postulates. Methods of isolation of pathogens. Bacterial infections
   

MCB 3303:  Immunology and Chemotherapy - (Pre-requisites: BCHM 2301, BIO 2201)

 

Basic concepts of immunology, structure of antigenic determinants cellular response, genetics of response to antigenic stimulation. Structure and classification of immunolglobulins and antibodies. Mechanisms of antibody formation. Antigen-antibody interactions; role of lymphoid tissues and thymus in immuno-responses. Hypersensitivity, immunopathology, auto-pathology, auto immunology, tumor and transplantation immunology, immunoprophylaxis modern techniques in immunology and immunochemistry. Principles of Chemothorapy. History of chemotherapy. Basic pharmaco dynamics and pharmacokinetics. Chemotherapeutic agents: antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral antiprotozoan and anti helminths. Modes of action of antimicrobials. Chemotherapy of specific diseases. Drug bio-assays and sensitivity tests


 

MCB 3204: Environmental Microbiology - (Pre-requisite: MCB 2201/2202)

 

Microorganisms and other organisms of importance in aquatic systems and disposals. Ecology of microorganisms in freshwater. Pollution and self-purification of waters, purification of water. Brief studies of marine microbiology. Water borne diseases. Microbiological examination of waters. Microbiology of waste disposal. Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), tests for Sewage and water


 

MCB 3306: Microbial Physiology and Metabolism - (Pre-requisites:  BCHM 2201, MCB 2201/2202)

  Aspects of microbial physiology; review of cell structure and function growth and death of microorganisms. The nutritional types of different bacteria in relation to their energy metabolism and biosynthetic activity.

 

MCB 3308: Pathogenic Mycology - (Pre-requisites:  MCB 2201/2202)

  Structure, reproduction and classification of pathogenic fungi. Laboratory methods of study; pathology and immunology of superficial systemic mycoses and actinomycoses

   

MCB 3209: Food Microbiology - (Pre-requisites:  MCB 2201/2202, BCHM 2301)

  The distribution role and significance of microorganisms in food, intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of food that affect microbial growth; food spoilage and food-borne diseases. Microorganisms as indices of food sanitary quality, microbiological standards of foods. Diseases of animals transmissible to man via animal food products

ZOO 3301: Protozoology - (Pre-requisite:  ZOO 2301)

  Classification and evolutionary relationships of the protozoa. Macro and Micro structure of protozoa. The role of protozoa in ecosystems. The ecology of protozoa, their physiology and biochemistry. Life histories of protozoa of medical and veterinary importance, with emphasis on tropical species; the pathology, epidemiology and control of protozoan infections.

  Functional comparative anatomy of the organ systems in vertebrates

   

ZOO 3303: Animals Physiology - (Pre-requisite: BIO 2203)

  The  principles of physiological adaptation and homeostasis. Metabolism. Measurement and rates; thermal relations of animals. Vertebrate digestive systems: Ruminant digestion. Respiratory systems of fish, amphibia, reptilia, birds and mammals.  Comparison of respiration in water and in air. Air and water breathing vertebrates. Respiratory pigments, right and left shift of Oxygen Dissociation Curve. Respiratory and circulatory changes in high altitude vertebrates and diving mammals. Osmo-regulation and excretion; evolution of the vertebrate kidney. The vertebrate nervous system; membrane potential: action potentials. Muscle structure and physiology. Vertebrate endocrinology: Outline and comparison with nervous system

  Insect evolution, classification and distribution. Organisation of external structure. Ingestion, digestion, excretion, blood circulation and nervous system. Behavior and ecology of social insects

  The ecology of local terrestrial and aquatic animals; growth rate and age structure of animal populations; natality and mortality, survivorship curves. Life tables and K-factor analysis. Competition. The natural regulation of animal numbers. Population cycles. The dynamics of predator-prey systems. The ecology of African mammals. Behavioural ecology

  Microbes and Ecological Theory. Physiological, morphological and genetic adaptations of microorganisms to their environment. Microbial interactions. Microorganisms in ecosystems. Microbial bio-conversions

   

MCB 4305:  Principles of Epidemiology and Public Health - (Pre-requisites: MCB 2201/2202, MCB 3302)

  Statistical application to epidemiology. Nature of epidemiological investigations. Spectrum of infections. Hard immunity.  Latency of infections. Multi-factorial systems in epidemics. Zoonoses. Antigenic drifts. Biological products for immunization. Recommended immunization schedules. International control of infectious diseases

   

MCB 4306: Virology - (Pre-requisites: MCB 2201/2202)

  Viruses pathogenic to man and animals with emphasis on virulence types of diseases caused methods of control. Experiments with bacteriophages and representative animal viruses to demonstrate characteristics of viruses and viral virulence. Methods of viral cultivation and identification, with special reference to tissue culture techniques

   

MCB 4307: Industrial Microbiology - (Pre-requisites: MCB 2201/2202/3306, BCHM 2201)

  Nature of Industrial Microbiology, Microorganisms of industrial importance. Aspects of the biology of molds, yeasts, Actinomycetes and viruses of importance in various fermentations. Culture techniques and maintenance of selected cultures.   Mutation, strain selection and development, hybridisation, media formulation and economics. Optimization of fermentation media at laboratory scale. Perimeter design operation. Antifoams. Aspects of biochemical engineering. Patents and patent laws

  Dynamics of wildlife population. Techniques of wildlife investigations. Principles of wildlife management. The wildlife resources of Nigeria: conservation policies, problems and prospects. World wildlife resources; differences in values, management philosophies and traditions

   

ZOO 4699:  Project

  Same as BIO 4699 but with emphasis on Zoology-based investigations
