MGS  1201: Introduction to Business        (2 credits)

        Basic Business concepts: Business, Commerce, trade, market - Meaning of Business Administration.  The nature and scope of business in society: Business ethics and social responsibility.  The business environment (social, political legal, technological, economic etc).  Forms of business ownership (sole proprietorship, partnership, limited company, joint venture, etc): Business growth, Introduction to the functional area of Business Administration

MGS  1202: Elements of Business Management        (2 credits)

        Principles of Management, Development of Management thought, planning, Organizing, directing, co-ordinating and controlling, Introduction and Marketing, the marketing terms, Market segmentation, Product classification, the marketing mix (product, price promotion, and physical distribution).  Business Finance, Introduction, the finance sources, Ratio analysis, and cash budgeting, source and application of funds statement, Introduction to capital budgeting, and the Nigerian Stock Exchange.  Introduction to personnel administration.  Production management.  An introduction to organisational behaviour.

MGS  1301: Elements of Book-keeping        (3 credits)

        This course is designed to introduce students with little or no background in accounting to the elementary principles.  Topics to be covered include, the nature and scope of accounting; concepts and convention, the nature of business transactions, and the preparation of petty cash book and the two-and three column cash books.  Preparation of the subsidiary books of entry (i.e. the journals); posting to ledger accounts and extraction of a simple trial balance would also be taught, the preparations of trading and profit and loss accounts and balance sheet Not involving adjustments and more complex items.

MGS  1302: Principles of Accounting        (3 credits)

        The Nature of Business transactions.  Definition of Accounting; the scope and function of Financial Accounting, Book-keeping, Types of business organisations.  The accounting equation, the theory of double entry book-keeping based, on the accounting equation, Journalising postings and nature of Accounts, Balancing and Trial Balance.  Unadjusted Profit and Loss Account and Balance sheet.  Adjustments, prepayments, accruals, correction of errors etc.  Adjusted P. & I. and Adjusted Balance Sheet.  Subsidiary books of account.  Cash book and bank reconciliation statement, sales Day and Purchases Day Book.  Receipts and payments Expenditure and Income Account.  Single Entry.  Nature of partnership and Legal aspects.  The adjustments in partnership Accounts, interest of capital, interests on drawings and partners salaries.  Admission of new partners.  Removal/Retirement of partners.  Dissolution of partnership.

        The focus of this course, as distinct from abstract mathematics, is to apply some basic and useful mathematical concepts to the solution of business problems.  thus the goal is to employ mathematics as a tool for decision-making in business.  A thorough grap of topics to be covered and problems that would be solved in this course is a pre-requisite for success in such courses as Cost Accounting, Advance Accounting, Management Accounting, Business statistics, Production Management, Business analysis, Financial and Investment Management, Economic analysis and even Marketing Management that would be offered in Part II and III of the degree programmes.

  

        Review of Fundamental Mathematics -  Complex number, Directed numbers. Arithmetic of directed numbers, Operation of Complex numbers, Ratios, Percentages, Square and Cube roots:          INTRODUCTION TO ALGEBRA: Simple Equations Inequalities and Applications, Simultaneous Equations with two unknowns:-  Solutions of Quadratic Equations - By factors - By solution by formula -Summation Principles - Notation - and Operations with sigma. 

                FUNCTIONS AND GRAPHS: Linear functions, Quadratic functions, functions of two and more variables, Systems of linear equations and inequalities, Graphical presentation of functions - Business applications of Functions and Graphs.          LOGARITHMS: Definition - Use of tables - Logarithmic functions - Exponential functions - Business Application of logarithms.

                MATHEMATICS OF FINANCE:         The Measurement of interest - simple and compound interest Cash flows - Present value technique - Elementary annuities - annuity immediate - annuity due, and - Perpetuities - Amortization Schedules and Sinking fund.

MGS  2202:  Principles of Management           (2 credits)

        The objective of this course is two fold, to solidify the students' knowledge of basic accounting principles developed earlier on and to prepare them for the more advanced topics in accounting principles.  The nature of  partnerships and the legal aspect.  Accounting for partnership form of business ownership.  Fixed and fluctuating capital accounts, the partners current accounts and the treatment of partners' interest on capital and on drawings.  The profit and loss Appropriation account as an extension of the  profit and loss Account.  Adjustment in partnership Accounts.  Admission of new partners and treatment of goodwill/ removal/Retirement of partners, Dissolution of partnership, single Entry System.  Accounting for specialized transactions such as joint ventures, consignment and hire-purchase agreements, Accounting for Royalties, accounting for Non-profit making organisations such as clubs and societies, Receipt and Payment and Income and Expenditure Accounts.  The elements of cost and manufacturing account.  the several specialized branches of Accounting and an overview of the prospects of those choosing  Accounting as a career.

        Introduction to Linear Programming (P.P): Definition of Linear Programming, Application of Linear Programming, Major requirements of a linear programming problem, Equations and Inequalities.  LINEAR PROGRAMMING (Continued) Graphical solution to maximizing problem (two variables), Graphical solution to minimizing problem (two variables), Some technical issues in Linear programming, extreme points, optimal solution, infeasibility, unboundedness, redundancy, more than one optional solution.  Simple Formulation problems, Business Application of Linear Programming.  SET THEORY.  Definition, Notations, elements of sets, and set Operations, union, Intersection, Complementation, Universal set, Subsets VENN DIAGRAMS Applications of set theory.

MGS 2205:        Administrative Management         (2 credits)

        MATRIX ALGEBRA - Introduction to matrix, Matrix Notation, Different types of matrices, Addition of matrixes, Subtraction of matrics, Multiplication of matrics, Transpore of matric, determinants, the inverse of a matrix systems of Linear equations, Cramers rule for solution of linear equation, Matrix Algebra with Business Applications.  DIFFERENTIAL CALCULUS Limits and continuity, Differentiation and gradients.  Maxima and minima, partial differentiation, Logarithmic differentiation, Trignometric differentiation, implicit differentiation, Business application of differential calculus.  INTEGRAL CALCULUS: Integration as the inverse of differentiation, Indefinite integral Definit integral - Area under Curve, Applications of integration, equations of curves - velocity and acceleration - solids of revolution, volume of sphere.

MGS 2206:  Corporate Accounts                       (2 credits)

        A shot historical survey of company accounting and evolution of the concept of limited liability.  Legal and accounting requirement with regard to formation and dissolution of companies; capital structure, sources of  Finance and role of stock Exchanges.  Accounting for the issue of shares, Equity and Preference, Redemption of Preference Shares, Issue and Redemption of Debentures.

 

SMS 2202:        Development Studies                  (2 credits)

        Introduction, definition and historical development of management.  the development of Modern Management, with particular reference to the contributions of Taylor, Fayol, Emerson, Gilbreth, Elton - Mayor, etc.

        PLANNING FUNCTION: Meaning, steps, and types of plans.  the obstacles to effective plans and ways of overcoming them.  the advantages and disadvantages of planning.  DECISION-MAKING: The process of decision making, Types of decisions.  Quantitative and qualitative aspects of decision making, OBJECTIVES: Definition, and types of objective.  Advantages of objectives Management by objectives (MBO).

 

MGS 2202: Administrative Management         (2 credits)

        Organising as a process - Definition, Departmentation, Span of control.  Types of organisation structure (line, line and staff, functional and committee), Delegation and decentralisation.  The Directing Function - communication, leadership, and motivation. COORDINATION: Definition, kinds and ways of achieving coordination, advantages and disadvantage of coordination.  CONTROL - Definition, and steps in control, the control techniques (Budgetary, and non-budgetary) Management development Programme:  Definition and reasons for the need for MDP.  Essentials of Management Development Programme.

ACC 3202:        Cost Accounting I         (2 credits)

        Nature and scope of cost accounting, Costing terminology, Classification of costs and analysis of cost behaviour.  Costing for materials, purchasing procedures and inventory control.  Labour costing and methods of remuneration.  Overhead costs accumulation, allocation and application.  Product costing concept and procedure.  Actual and normal job order costing.

        Sources of Corporate finance, Preparation and interpretation of financial statements and reports, share valuation concept and their economic significance: treatment of income tax in published company accounts, Published Accounts and the companies Decree, l968, Amalgamation Absorption and Reconstruction.  Accounts of Banks, Insurance companies, Holding companies.

        Concept, objectives and principles of taxation.  Historical development and functions of taxation in Nigeria.  Legislation, jurisdiction and administration (Income tax Management Act, 1961). Relevant Tax authority and income chargeable. Individual reliefs, allowances and assessments.  Commencement and cessation of employment and trade.  Changes in Accounting year.  Reliefs for losses and capital allowances.

 

ACC 4303: Management Accounting I                          (3 credits)

        Nature and scope of management accounting and its relationship with financial accounting and cost accounting.  strategic and operation planning.  Approaches to cost estimation and prediction.  Profit planning model.  Financial forecasting and planning.  Revenue, production, purchases and expenses budgets.  Budgeted income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement.  Special decisions in short-run planning.  Capital budgeting models.

 

ACC 4203: Business Finance                          (2 credits)

        The nature and scope of business finance, capital formation and sources finance, types of stocks, share and debentures; capital gearing.  Objectives and strategies of individual and institutional investors, unit and investment trusts and life, insurance, property and pension funds; role and mechanics of a stock exchange.  Government fiscal policy and role of central bank in regulating interest rates and money supply.  Rate of return on capital employed; the accounting and economic concept of profit.  Corporate financial and divided policy.  Principles and sources of short and long term capital financing.  Management of working capital and non-current assets, cash flow charts and determination of financial stability and liquidity valuation of quoted and unquoted securities.  Accounting ratios and other analytical techniques.  Capital cost and risk analysis.  Capital forecasting and analysis of long term investment opportunities.  Project evaluation and rate of return methodology; the present value, payback period and time discounted and compounded rates of return.

Methodology in accounting, Accounting standards.  The concept of income and income measurement in accounting.  Valuation of  Assets and liabilities.  Criticisms of the conventional financial statements.  Accounting for corporate social responsibility.  Introduction to a comparative study of accounting systems.

 

ACC 4205 Investment Management                                (2 credits)

        The investment setting, a brief history of investment management, objectives of the investor, the securities markets, role of Economic analysis (common measures of economic analysis, life-cycle concept, industry analysis, Financial statement analysis, security Evaluation, Common Stock, Bonds, Debentures, and Preferred Stock, Portfolio composition, traditional approach, principles of diversification, mean - variance portfolio composition models, wealth maximisation model, Evaluation portfolio  performance, Investment timing, defensive approaches to investment timing, business and economic indicators, Predicting Stock prices with market statistics.  Efficiency of the capital markets and stock market.

        Audit of the accounts of banks, insurance companies and other trading and non-trading institutions.  Auditing computer systems - internal control in EDP., Audit of group accounts.  Investigation and Profit forecasts.  Internal and Management auditing, Contemporary auditing standards, U.K. and U.S.A. and others.

 

ACC 4305 Taxation II         (3 credits)

        Assessment of Partners' income.  Companies income tax administration, CITA assessments of companies profits chargeable, objections, appeals collection, recovery and repayments, Pioneer companies, Banks and Insurance companies, Transport companies, petroleum profits tax, capital gains and capital transfer, Double taxation relief, Settlements, trust and estates.

 

ACC 4306 Management Accounting II                          (3 credits)

        Concept of controls, Responsibility accounting for cost centres, Flexible budgets, material labour, and overhead variance analysis, Responsibility accounting for revenue and profit centre, Sales variances in single and multiple product firms, responsibility accounting for investment centre, Decentralization, evaluation of investment centre performance, transfer pricing, manipulation of accounting data for interpretation preparation of fund flow statement, Conversion of accrual statements to cash statements.
